A third of the world's obsidian can be found west of the city of Guadalajara, outsized only by the deposits of Africa's Rift Valley and the Oregon Plateau. Mexico's obsidian began as lava oozing out of cracks in the side of the Tequila Volcano several million years ago. Less than 90,000 years ago more lava came forth from the Colli area, today known as the Primavera Forest. As a result, the Tequila-Colli area became one of the world's best ancient mining zones for volcanic glass, providing the pre-Columbian inhabitants a priceless "gift of the gods".
In the sleepy pueblito of Navajas, (30 km southwest of Guadalajara) artesanos produce small hearts, butterflies and other polished stones of different varieties of obsidian. A bit farther away in the town of La Lobera, seems to be where the best rainbow obsidian comes from. The colors in obsidian come from traces of different minerals embedded in it. A microscopic partical of iron gives you red, while a tiny bit of copper makes it green. There can also be rare mineral elements like rubidium, lanthanum and molybdenum.
Large deposits of rainbow obsidian can be found high in the mountains and obsidian in blue, black, grey, red and chocolate colors can be found in the cool oak and pine forestsin the surrounding area. Archeologists have catalogued more than 1,000 mines and quarries in the area and estimate that there may be up to 4,000 more The two largest deposits are La Joya and El Pedernal. Itzli is the Nahuatl word for obsidian.
Please
Note: In some of the obsidian cabochon photos there
are reflections and white specks (dust). These cabs are mirror
polished and anything within a 360° radius is reflected like
a mirror and every minute speck of dust flowing through the air
is attracted like a magnet - these stones are gem quality specimens
and have no flaws, you can also view our Testimonals .
